Below are a some of the most common questions that are asked about tanning. Click on any of the questions
and you'll be linked to the correct answer below.
Can tanning indoors cause skin cancer?
Continuous excessive overexposure to UV light from any source (indoor tanning technology or the outside sun)
can cause skin cancer. Squamous & basal cell carcinomas seem to take 15-30 years to develop. Melanoma now
appears in some cases in teenagers & may require less time than basal & squamous cell carcinomas to develop.
An introduction period of 3-30 years would be more reasonable time for melanoma, give the existing studies
and the incidence in teenagers. Therefore, it is very difficult to isolate that indoor tanning is directly
linked to the reported increase of skin cancer. SAE recommends that all UV exposure be moderate from any
source. If a person is predisposed to skin cancer tanning indoors & outdoors should be avoided. Golden rule
of tanning, NEVER SUNBURN! (top)
Can I tan throughout the year without harming my skin?
Depending on your skin type, smart tanning is being moderate & responsible about tanning practices such
as following the recommended exposure schedule based on your skin type. Skin damage, including skin cancer,
could occur if a person overexposes the skin to UV. NEVER SUNBURN! (top)
Can UV rays pass through the protective layers of the skin and affect internal organs?
UV lights rays from indoor tanning units have the ability to penetrate the dermis and the epidermis skin
layers, down to the skin's sub-cutaneous layer. Because UV light does not penetrate further, internal
organs cannot be affected. Which eliminates the urban legend of cooking your
insides! (top)
Is eye protection required for indoor tanning?
YES! You are only given one set of eyes. Do not risk blindness, cataracts, or other by damage by not
wearing protective eyewear! Towels, t-shirts, coins, and other items will not protect your eyes!
Strict federal laws require that eye protection be worn be every indoor
tanner. (top)
What is the difference between low pressure units & high pressure units?
Low pressure units emit both UVA & UVB at a low energy level. Low pressure units will
give more of a red tone tan, and you'll need to maintain more often. High pressure units
generate UVC, UVB, & UVA, but by means of a sophisticated filtering system, only UVA is
emitted during a tanning session. It will take fewer sessions with a high pressure unit it
to build a golden tan and to keep it. (top)
Is high pressure tanning for me?
If you are looking to reduce the frequency of your tanning, high pressure tanning is what you
want! Using the right equipment, plus the right accelerator, you could only need to maintain
2-3 times a month! (top)
I'm on a medication, should I be tanning?
ALWAYS check w/ your doctor first! Even though it may not be labeled on your prescription as
sensitive to the sun, you may be on a few medications that may react to sun exposure
differently. (top)
I do not tan well outdoors, will I be able to tan indoors?
Normally, a person tans as well as they tan outside. Some who do not tan well outdoors are able to tan
indoors, due to a controlled environment and the right amount of exposure in the right about of intervals.
Cal Tan Sunless may be the thing for you! Plus you can use it right at
home! (top)
I tanned a few days ago & didn't burn, but I went yesterday & did, why is that?
Everyone is different when it comes to tanning. Certain things can throw you off & can cause you to
burn. Birth control pills, antibiotics, citrus fruits, celery, cosmetics, & soaps, just to name a few,
can increase your chances of burning. This is called a photo allergy, which happens when light rays
and chemicals have a reaction. Also make sure your daily face and body moisturizer do not contain an
SPF. (top)
I heard I shouldn't shower right away after I tan. Is this true?
This is a myth! Tanning is a process that can take up to 24 hours to develop. You can not "wash"
away your tan, unless you are using a self tanner, shaving right away, or exfoliating your skin can
inhibit your tanning process. Showering before tanning is known to help you tan
easier! (top)
If I tan indoors before I go on vacation, do I have to wear an SPF?
Yes! Whenever you are in the real sun, you should always wear an SPF! Your lips, ears, eyelids,
and the soles of your feet (along w/ other parts of the body) do not contain melanin; which means
they will burn the fastest, and never tan. You should always wear an SPF lip balm, along w/
sunglasses that are UV protected. Bring along a burn relief gel just in case, we recommend California
Tan Insurance. Trust us, it works miracles! (top)
What is the Sun Protection Factor (SPF)?
The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is the ratio between the amount of exposure to UVB rays required to
cause skin redness when a chemical sunscreen is applied compared to when it is
not. (top)
What is the difference between a sun block and a sunscreen?
Sun blocks (physical sunscreens) are opaque formulations which absorb, reflect and scatter up to 99%
of both UV and visible light. Because they are messy and may stain clothing, sun blocks are often used
on such sun-sensitive areas as the nose, lips, ears, and shoulders. Examples of ingredients in sun blocks
are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
Sunscreens (chemical sunscreens) absorb specific wavelengths (range of 200-400 nm) and are classified
as drugs by the FDA because they are "...intended to protect the structure and function of the human
integument against actinic damage." Sunscreens are considered more cosmetically refined due to their
pleasing consistency and are, therefore, typically used over a prolonged time for effective photo
protection.
Note: Please do not wear a sunscreen in our tanning units, unless for face, ears, lips, tattoos,
and/or scabs, otherwise it will block what you are trying to achieve, and may ruin our equipment.
Thank you.
